At The Ren Clinic, we believe the stories that make up your life are uniquely rich. Your symptoms help tell this story, and we will partner with you to decode their meaning. By offering an integrative medicine approach, we help you access the care you need to achieve optimal health and prevent future disease. We do this in the service of building stronger individuals, families, and communities.
Bringing Humanity Back Into Medicine
What is the meaning of Ren?
January 10, 2018Ren, the Chinese character for Humanity, represents our calling to support the integrity, the grace, and the health of the human spirit through engagement with each other.
At peak fitness at age 58, I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis at L-3 and L-4 to go along with my bulging disc problems at L-5 and L-6. I could no longer ski, hike, garden or engage in many of my normal activities. Surgery was not an option. I worked with several highly reputable physical therapists for several years only to find an increase in my neuralgia, muscle cramps, foot numbness, back aches and sleep problems. Inactive, I gained at least 25 pounds. I became depressed. Enter Dr. Mayer. She immediately diagnosed that I had a long term posture problem that exacerbated my symptoms and thwarted more traditional therapies. We literarily started at the bottom, the lowest part of my back, and through a series of postures and movements my sway back began to straighten. With time, my symptoms receded; the vertigo, the pins and needles, the numbness, the back pain, and the depression. I treasure my relationship with Dr. Mayer for the way she inspires me keep up with my health practices. Learning together has brought us closer together. I can not recommend a better partner for creating and maintaining a life with good health!
